MAMBO releases its Legacy Booklet

MAMBO has released its Legacy Booklet, a comprehensive overview of the tools, findings and policy contributions developed throughout the project.

Funded under the European Union's Horizon Europe programme, MAMBO brought together ten partner institutions from across Europe to explore how artificial intelligence, computer vision, bioacoustics, remote sensing (including LiDAR), drones and citizen science can transform the way biodiversity is monitored. The booklet, published by Pensoft Publishers, documents the project's technologies, demonstration sites and policy recommendations, offering a lasting resource for researchers, practitioners and decision-makers.

What's inside

The booklet covers the full breadth of MAMBO's work, including:

  • MAMBO technologies – light and insect camera traps for monitoring nocturnal and diurnal pollinators, sound recognition, image recognition for citizen scientists, plant quadrat image analysis, high-resolution species and habitat maps, airborne laser scanning, and a toolbox for mapping shrub cover and biomass from drone imagery.
  • Demonstration sites – results from field testing across France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Malta.
  • Policy relevance – how MAMBO's tools can support the EU Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (EU PoMS), feed into the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, and connect with IPBES and IPCC assessment processes through a dedicated route map and policy briefs.


In his foreword, project coordinator Prof. Toke Thomas Høye highlights the consortium's commitment to making biodiversity monitoring "more automated, scalable and cost-efficient, while remaining firmly grounded in ecological expertise and real-world needs," and points to the project's open-science legacy through its dedicated topical collection in the Research Ideas and Outcomes (RIO) Journal.
